Album Artwork Mayhem

Confession time. I've been done recording for a while now. Months in fact. Sent it to the Mastering engineer, edited his work, sent it back and now I have a finished project.

Well...mostly finished. I've hit a roadblock when it has come to the album artwork. Who know this could be so hard? I want the artwork to reflect the passion of the music that I created, I don't want to have it be an after thought. It took so much of me to make the album I can't skimp on this part. I am open to ideas if you have any! :)

Sometimes its a matter of getting the right picture. I have plenty of mock up album covers, but none of them quite fit the album.

On the other side, the everything but the artwork seems to be done! So once that is finished, this thing will have a release date! Don't forget to add yourself to the newsletter to find out about presales of the album, sneak peaks, videos, etc! It will come soon-- i promise!

Two weeks Album Update

It's Monday!
Hope everyone's weekend was filled with "fun in the sun" or at least fun. If not, don't sweat, you and I were in the same boat as I spent most of the weekend chained in my studio mixing music. As a result, I set myself up for a very sleepy week at work. Oh well... nothing coffee won't fix!

So, here's the deal:

I am about 95% done recording. At the moment i'm stuck there for a few weeks... I'm waiting for my friend to record some cello on a song. So recording is temporarily in limbo. At least it's close!

Overall, recording and mixing combined, the album became officially 3/4ths complete this weekend. I have a spreadsheet in which i keep track of everything that needs to get done and tracks progress. For the past 3 months i've been watching a little graph slowly get closer to 100%.. some days it feel like it will never happen, others move quickly.

So what comes after all that? Well, to be honest... a ton of stuff...

Copyrighting in the U.S. Patent office usually takes about 3 or 4 months, which may feel like a long time, but it gives me the time that i need to throw everything else together. Also, assuming i finish the music in time, i'll send this off real quick right before i vacation for 2 months.

-Album art.
I have a few pictures already, but i'm currently in the process of getting a few more taken in various places. Who knows what will come of it. At the moment, I'm just having fun with it. Plus it doesn't end at pictures. After that starts the endless task of adding my name, trying different fonts, etc. Also, if you didn't realize, there are multiple parts of CD art: cover, back, cd tray, booklet, etc..

Luckily this process is less involved. At least temporarily I'll have a break from my songs and then they will be handed back to me to be looked at critically, played back on every stereo in my house and quite possibly other people's houses and then handed back to the mastering engineer to do his thing and make tweeks to make everything pristine.

In between losing my mind mixing and recording, I've started picking up the side project of making lyric videos for a few of my songs. I'm wokring on some dynamic typography videos (google it-you've probably seen it!) for a couple of my songs for those of you that like a visual aid while listening to music. It also gives my ears a bit of a critic break and exercises my eyes.

There are several other things, but these are the main ones on my mind lately.

Anyway, taking a break for a couple days and then back to the grindstone!

Take care,

Michael Dasso

4th of July Weekend/Album Update

I hope everyone had an excellent 4th of July weekend. My weekend was filled with adventures with friends ranging across Oregon and Washington, but now the three day weekend is over and it is back to the grindstone!
Good news!

I am reaching the end of what feels like a NEVER ENDING process! I’ve been thinking about this album for so long, hearing it in my mind, setting expectations for it and trying to live up to so many expectations of others that, quite frankly, it has stressed me out and sometimes reduces my motivation to rubble. The fortunate part is that the album is about 90% recorded – just a cello track on one song, some drums, and playing with one song I’m not satisfied with yet - stand between me and declaring this album officially recorded! From there, I have to mix the album (which is currently about 2/3rds complete and happening fast), and from there have it has to be professionally mastered (fortunately it is not something I have to do, so it’ll take far less time! Ha!).

In the midst of all that, whenever I can’t stand listening to myself anymore I put time into researching copyright, developing album artwork, figuring out the order of songs (which is surprisingly harder than it sounds!), and all these other facets that I didn’t even consider would take so much of my time until I started researching and developing my game plan. It’s all so exhausting, but also very much worth it. As things come together, I am seeing how all this time (6 months of actual recording plus writing for the past 5 years…) is paying off and I can’t wait to share this with all of you. All my thoughts, emotions, and experiences have been etched into the several notebooks, pixilated into word files and then put to music, critiqued, destroyed, rebuilt and ultimately recorded and recorded and recorded again.

I have many things in the works coming up that you will see!

Until next time!
